Otty Sanchez: Mom Eats Her Baby
Have you heard about this? It happened a month ago, but has only just now come to my attention. In honesty, I wish it hadn’t. Otty Sanchez, a schizophrenic, post-partum depressed mother off her meds, hears the devil tell her to kill her 3 1/2 week old baby after breaking up with her boyfriend, the father. She decapitaties it and begins to eat parts of its brain and its toes. When she awakens from her psychotic state and realizes what she has done, she tries to kill herself.
Since having a child, I have become so vulnerable to the world, I sometimes wish that I could rewind time to a place where the only thing I had to fear was my own death. But then I wouldn’t have my baby girl. It’s a dangerous dichotomy. I have no personal experience with schizophrenia and could not speak for one who does. I only know that it makes a person do things that they never would if they were in their right mind. In an alternative universe inside our brains, a “devil” exists, that feeds off our vulnerabilities, emotions, stresses and heartbreak. Ms. Sanchez is the worst kind of victim. I like to think that her baby is better off. Unfortunately, she has to live with herself.
Ms. Sanchez did seek help and go to a hospital for emergency care where she was soon dismissed, her mental health overlooked. This says a lot about the problems in our medical care system that need more than just “health care reform” to fix.
