West Coast Road Trip ’09- Eugene, Oregon
After Crater Lake, we headed for Eugene, Oregon and landed at the very cool Eugene Whiteaker Hostel.

Great Hostel
We splurged on a room there to be decadent for Father’s Day and, since our camper was parked in a camp site, stayed in the camp site the second night. The Whiteaker hostel composts, recycles and grows some of their food. Hostels are always a great place to meet fellow gypsies. Mac, who runs the place, is a very cool guy and open to discuss the Eugene scene, which is how we learned that we didn’t just land in the weirdest city in the world, just the weirdest neighborhood, Whiteaker. By weird, I mean awesome, of course, and wild and funky and unique and charming. There was a camper van or VW bus on every block in the ‘hood. People seemed to be dressed in costume for no apparent reason and took pride in decorating their porches with vivid pizazz.

And by evening, everyone was hanging out on those porches. We were happy to be in town instead of a campground on the outskirts and to walk and bike everywhere. Eugene is also super bike friendly and we took advantage of their river front bike path. There were also a couple of playgrounds nearby. Two thumbs up for Eugene.
