Acupuncture after Pregnancy

I started seeing an acupuncturist for my shoulder. I don’t know what is wrong with it, but it hurts. I can imagine straining it while lifting a baby several times a day, carrying a baby on my back or simply nursing hunched over. While I thought I was getting treatments solely for my shoulder, I actually learned that I needed much more as a woman recovering from childbirth and pregnancy.

Apparently, in China, where acupuncture and oriental medicine originated from, women go through elaborate treatments around their reproductive and other organs to revitalize them, since so much energy goes into birthing and growing a baby. My acupuncturist described it as one’s uterus being almost cold or empty of energy, weak. It lead me to consider how in our own culture, once the baby is born, all energy goes to the baby and the mother’s needs are often overshadowed. Women are usually too busy to take care of themselves, let alone revitalize.

Logically, I always knew I needed to take care of myself, but realistically, I couldn’t really find the time or the energy, leading to a negative cycle. Now that I have been getting treatments, I have the energy to do things that help me gain more energy, in turn, feeding a postive cycle. If you are a new mom, consider treating yourself to something revitalizing, if not acupuncture, maybe yoga classes, massages or daily jogs.
