Madlyn Primoff: Kicking her Kids to the Curb

First of all, I would like to know, what’s the big deal? Child endagerment? They were in White Plains for goodness sake. What were her kids in danger of, honing their luxury vehicle identification skills, getting their toes stuck in freshly aerated lawns? The answer, apparently, is that they were in danger of being treated to ice cream by a friendly neighbor. And, worst of all, seeing their mom handcuffed and thrown into jail.

In case you haven’t heard about this famous case of child endangerment: one wealthy Scarsdale Lawyer/Mom gets fed up with her daughters bickering in the back of their Lexus mini-van (is there such a thing?) and kicks them out of the car. The twelve year old chases her down and is allowed back into the car. The ten year old cries on the curb until a kind stranger gives her ice cream and escorts her to police. When Primoff goes to the station to pick up her daughter, she is arrested.

Since nearly every article on this case points out that she lives in a $2 million home with her lawyer husband, I can’t help but wonder how much the fact that she is rich plays into all of the shaming and accusing going on. If a poor woman on welfare did the same thing, would it make the news? While some blame her demanding career for stressing her out, I consider that she can probably afford a nanny, cook and housekeeper. Her precious few moments with her children should be pleasurable.

Parents, what do we truly love about this story? The fact that most of us out thereĀ  have experienced those moments when we wish we could pull over and leave the kids on the curb to fend for themselves and learn a lesson to shut-up while mommy/daddy is driving. But, of course, we never have (or never got caught). And maybe, while a large part of our conscience admonishes,” how could she?” , a small, teeny part of us cheers, “good for her!”
