From Parties to Puppets

Bread and Puppet Circus

Bread and Puppet Circus

Before I had a child, for entertainment, my husband and I liked to go to bars, rock concerts, the occasional karaoke night, action thriller movies and parties. When I became pregnant, it was clear to me that none of the things we liked to do involved children. I grew concerned that my lifestyle would have to change drastically and I wasn’t sure I was ready for it. I was still of the mindset that “family fun” was dorky. But, no longer.

As you know, everything changes when you have a child. So, what you do for a good time is low on your list of priorities for the first year or so. Once you remove all the vices that you used to fall back on, the corresponding locales (for example, drinking at a bar) don’t seem as fun as B.C. (Before Child). Post-nightfall is usually the time you have alone with your partner to relax and take care of everything you couldn’t when baby was awake. My ideal night is most nights, hot tubbing and then watching a movie with my husband while eating a bowl of ice cream.

As for entertainment, I have discovered that not only is “family fun” not dorky at all, but it really is freakin’ fun. It never occurred to me to go to the zoo before, but it was so cool to see all those animals and watch how much fun my daughter had. Oh, let’s not forget puppet shows. Puppet shows absolutely rock. The one we saw today had political commentary for the adults and moral lessons about friendship for the kids. Mostly, I just like the cool puppets, especially the life-size ones. There is the kiddie pool, the aquarium, the planetarium, the children’s museum, the circus, and as she gets older, so much more to explore. The best part is doing it together as a family and seeing my daughter have a great time.

Yes, my life has changed, but so have my values, my priorities and my needs. Right now, all I need is some coffee ice cream with hot fudge topping.
