Spring Break Road Trip ’09: Day 4

Waking up in Cloudcroft was a pleasure. At 9,000 feet, the air was cool, just like we were used to at home. While vacationing, especially with kids,  it is great to stay at a locally owned hotel in the middle of town and be able to walk everywhere. This is particularly appreciated when you have been road tripping around and want a break from the car for a while. We easily found a coffee shop and were grateful to discover a basket of toys and books for our daughter to occupy herself with as we fed her fruit from the couch while sipping on our tea and nibbling quiche and egg sandwiches. Ah, luxury.

Hiking in the Woods

Hiking in the Woods

Even though the day was cloudy and our daughter had been running a slight fever from her new teeth and really not sleeping well at all, we still wanted to take advantage of the mountain scenery and do some hiking. Cloudcroft had a historic railroad and you can walk along a parallel path to it’s old rail passage. Along the way, you can see the remnants of the old trestles, the highest and, imaginably, scariest of it’s day. Our daughter slept in the Ergo baby carrier most of the way and awoke in time for snacks. The entire three mile hike was a great way to get some exercise after sitting on our butts for so long.

Continuing into the moutains, we had lunch in Ruidoso. Though we try our best to time our daughter’s naps so that they end up when we are driving distances, this doesn’t always work. She napped through lunch. So, when she awoke, we decided to pull over at a rock shop and allow her some time to walk around and admire the rocks and cats. We spent the night in Soccorro, just to get an early start the next day.  Unfortunately, our daughter’s fever and poor napping was really beginning to get to her and we had a tough time getting her to sleep. We couldn’t do the old stroller trick because it was raining out. So, once again, we sat in the dark and waited for her to drift into a restless slumber.
