Spring Break Road Trip ’09: Day 3

BAAAAA!
Though not well rested, we were determined to make up for the last two unproductive days with exciting activities. We began the morning (after the tedious process of loading everything back into the truck) at the New Mexico Heritage Farm and Museum. A large building complex and dairy farm with activities for adults and children. We breezed through the adult exhibits showing the history of agriculture in New Mexico while our daughter shouted out the animals and their sounds. We then proceeded to the Adventure Corral where our daughter continued to shout out the animals and their sounds. After that, we went to the barn where our daughter, yes, shouted out the animals and their sounds. All this farm fun culminated at the Discovery Garden where she played in the sand and let me pull her around in a wagon, very farm-like of us. She napped on our way over the Needle Mountains to White Sands National Monument.

Climbing the Dunes
Our little family kicked off our shoes and hiked our way up the dunes letting our bare toes sink into the cold, white gypsum. At the peak of the dunes, everything else disappeared and there was nothing in sight, but white and distant mountains. Our daughter toddled through the sand as if each step were her most precious and our dog panted his way unwaveringly up the highest slopes. My husband leaped and bounded over dune rims and I followed close, though more mildly, behind after doing some yoga, just to imitate the Ali McGraw video. We could have stayed longer, but the sun was beating down as it does in the southwest, so we left with a promise to return again when our kid was just a little older.
Tonight, we are resting in a vintage hotel in the funky town of Cloudcroft. Anticipating another exciting day ahead. Child passed out at the breast, exhausted.

Thank you so much, on behalf of dairy farmers across the nation for visiting a dairy farm. I hope it was a great experience for you and your family!

We had a blast and I highly recommend it to all families. Kids love farm animals. Let’s encourage this interest and, as you said, support our farmers.
