Spring Break Road Trip ’09: Day 1
I have traveled all over the world under intense and difficult situations, such as sleeping on a centipede infested mattress on a dirt floor in India or vacating a bus due to a bomb threat in Israel or paying a quarter for a Chinese bathroom (you’d have to smell it to believe it). Yet traveling with children requires a whole new set of skills and rules that I wasn’t quite prepared for. We’ve traveled with my daughter several times now including our five week road trip to New Orleans last spring. But not yet a mobile toddler, I was able to sit her in the corner with toys and take care of dinner. Now that she is walking, and does not care to be held for long, a new breed of vigilance is required.
We sold our camper van in the fall in hopes of buying a cab over camper to replace it, but it has been difficult to find one to fit our truck. Our plan was to spend the first day of our vacation in Santa Fe looking for one. We had a good lead, but, alas, it did not fit. So, we’re stuck in hotel rooms. Hotel rooms suck because you have to carry all your stuff in and all your stuff out each day. With a toddler, this means all the more stuff. It also sucks because you’re not camping, your neighbors are loud, you have to eat restaurant food and there is a television (this last part is a curse and a blessing).
The biggest challenge today, aside from the camper dilemma, was getting our daughter to fall asleep in the hotel. She is used to having her own room. We are not used to sitting in the dark waiting for her to fall asleep. But when 10 p.m. rolled around, three hours past her bedtime, and nothing was working, we did exactly that. In the dark and silence of our strange musty room, I couldn’t help but take a moment to consider all the crappy T.V. shows I was missing.

Hey Eremeeff (how do you pronounce that?)- Thanks for your interest. As you may know, being a parent makes time an unpredictable asset. I try to post everyday, but a lot depends on how the day goes. No worries though, I’ll keep it coming…
