OctoMom: Super Mom or Super Psycho?

OctoMom, as she has been coined by the media, has united the country in anger over her lack of economic discretion and seemingly obsessive need to have more children than fries in a Happy Meal. I don’t even know where to begin. I can safely infer from this news story that this woman has some serious psychological issues. Just to summarize: Nadya Suleman is 33, single and has 14 children under 8 years of age all of which she conceived via IVF, the most famous being the last eight, the octuplets irresponsibly implanted by a Beverly Hills clinic. She is a graduate student who lives with her parents who just recently claimed bankruptcy and had to move into the house they bought for their daughter (which the rumor mill claims may be going into foreclosure). She lives on disability checks including those for three of her fourteen children. She collects food stamps and all of her hospital costs are paid for by state tax funded health care. {Editor’s Note: This information may or may not be true, but probably is.} Can anyone guess why, in this time of recession, the American people may be a little angry with her?

As a mom, I am particularly miffed by this woman’s reckless desire to have children. I feel guilty about over-population when I consider having two. But what really upsets me is how screwed up her fourteen kids are going to be having her as their mother.

Here is a short list of some of the mental health problems I have concluded that Suleman must have:

  1. Disconnect from Reality– It is no coincidence that this woman lives in L.A. and is asking for $2 million for interviews with Sawyer and Winfrey. She has already decided that she wants her own show where she stars as a child expert. This is an obvious result of our society’s obsession with reality shows and, hence, our disconnect from what reality is actually like, such as having fourteen kids.

  2. Only Child Syndrome– As an only child growing up, Suleman says that she longed for connections and attachments she missed out on. It is very common for only children to feel as if they missed out on something, like someone else to blame when they get into trouble.

  3. Celebrity Obsession Disorder– While Suleman has denied charges of plastic surgery, you can’t deny the resemblance to Angelina Jolie. Jolie has been quoted as calling her “creepy” after receiving several letters from her proclaiming how wonderful a mother Jolie is and how talented an actress. This disorder is most common in adolescent girls and adult females who have not outgrown adolescence.
