Read it Again, Mom

How many times can you read The Jolly Barnyard before a tick develops that causes you to cluck intermittently while conversing? How many times can you read These Are My Hands before you begin announcing your body parts to grocery clerks? How many times can you read Red Fish Blue Fish before you begin speaking in rhyme at the post office? I have tested these theories and have found that, although mommies may feel like we are incurring these oddities, no one else seems to notice. So, we’re in the clear. Perhaps it is the unshowered disheveled look that allows us to get away with these quirks or the sleeplessness that makes us think we are speaking out loud when we didn’t actually say anything. I can’t be sure. Only, know this: You may feel insane, but you are not, not yet at least.

Your child will want you to read their new favorite book to them until they have it memorized. You will look at them lovingly and coo at the cute little animal sounds but, eventually, even the coolest mom will want to pull out her hair and scream, “Just let me use the potty!” (We now say potty instead of bathroom.) Repeat this mantra as frequently as you can remember it: Children learn through repetition. Your little one is becoming the genius you knew they had the potential to be and all you have to do is summon the patience to read The Little Engine that Could, once again. I think I can, I think I can, I think I can…
